New York giant, Shannon Briggs has been forced out of his March 10th defence against Russian Sultan Ibragimov with a bout of ‘walking pneumonia’, a curious condition but one clearly likely to constrain a fighter already battling asthma. The fight will be re-arranged as promptly as possible though whether the same venue can be secured remains unconfirmed.
Though scheduled for the… WBO Heavyweight title belt, the fight isn’t a compelling match-up as neither fighter represents the future of the division, or particularly the present. Briggs, who won the title by last second knockout against Serguei Lyakhovich, is known to American audiences because of his defeat to Lennox Lewis and controversial victory over George Foreman, a decade or more a go. Since those days, he’s dabbled in film – playing henchmen in B-Movie action flicks – Ibragimov, is famous for even less and though game and hungry, he lacks the quality of moves to engage boxing fans. Still it would pitch two punchers together and any cancellation is frustrating.
Hopefully, the dread-locked barrel will be back in action soon.
