No weekend long-shot this week as the schedule failed to throw up a contest of interest. However, I’ll take the space to suggest a fighter to keep an eye out for this weekend. British fans will have to check a result and little more as all eyes turn to the mega fight between Oscar and Floyd on TV but the American audience could get to see the re-emergence of a potential star of the prize ring.
Mexican Light-Welterweight Francisco Bojado, who turns 24 next week, returns from a three year hiatus following a narrow points defeat to a resurgent Jesse James Leija against Welterweight trial horse, Dairo Jose Esales. Esales has lost to likes of Ben Rabah and Julio Diaz in his recent career and is clearly booked for a loss. He too is only just back from a long break from the ring but went 8 rounds last time out.
Bojado was projected as a future superstar back in 2003 and 2004 as he carved his way through the lower end of the Light-Welterweight world scene. At just 21, he was being positioned for a world-title shot and though he dropped Leija in the second he lost over the distance and disappeared from the sport despite a strong and vocal following.
He still has youth on his side and it will be interesting to see how quickly he can re-establish himself at 140 pounds.
