The BBC report that New Zealand international Rugby League star and Wakefield captain Monty Betham will follow in the footsteps of fellow Antipodean Anthony Mundine and fore sake his stature as a leading Rugby player for the squared circle.
Initially Betham intends to compete in the Cruiserweight division, with the 175 pound Light Heavyweight class his ultimate destination. If he is able to reach the levels attained by Mundine he will bring a much needed fillip to New Zealand boxing, with leading lights David Tua and Kali Meehan presently some way from elite competition.
Betham has history on his side, Monty Snr had 53 fights in the seventies and eighties as a 160-175lb competitor.
