Gunn Looking to Overthrow Castro

GunnDo you see what I did there? Love him or hate him, plucky pug Bobby Gunn is proving hard to ignore since his crushing defeat to Enzo Maccarinelli earlier this year. Eager publicity agent, Knockout Publicity, capitalised on the usually, fleeting profile afforded to challengers plucked from obscurity to contend WBO belts. People laughed at claims he was the most ferocious fighter since Jack Dempsey, and while I concede mentioning Gunn’s name in the same sentence as the Manassa Mauler pains me, I can’t help featuring updates for the Light-Heavyweight from Hackensack. Jorge Castro is next in his sights.

This latest installment features Gunn’s pursuit of veteran Jorge Fernando Castro, the 40 year old Argentinean with an incredible 130-11-3 professional record. A unfathomable achievement across 5 divisions. Add a 2005 crash that left Castro with a collapsed lung and broken ribs, injuries he subsequently overcame to fight again; losing and avenging in two fights with Jose Luis Herrera, and the depth of Castro’s resolve and love of boxing is evident. He’s variously shared a ring with Duran, Norris, Jones Jnr., Jirov, Gomez, Reggie Johnson and John David Jackson. Even at 40, one would suspect he’d know too much for Bobby Gunn.

Matching Gunn has proven harder than posting press releases. As late notice opponents with 0-5 and 19-14 records had to suffice in his two victories since the Maccarinelli fight. The most notable target being former Light-Heavyweight king and star of Rocky Balboa, Antonio Tarver. Tarver opted for George Blades instead. Now it seems Castro is the target, beyond another engagement pencilled in for December 7th.

PRESS RELEASE

Bobby Gunn To Fight December 7th in Atlanta

For Immediate Release

Former IBA Champion and World ranked Cruiserweight Bobby Gunn 18-3 {15 KO’s} will attempt to continue his winning streak on December 7th at Club Europe in Atlanta , Georgia . Gunn is excited about his first trip to the Peach State and hopes to get another major fight in the near future.

“I was originally scheduled to fight November 17th in Virginia on another Han Kim card. The fight fell through because of certain people who sent the promoter bad checks. There were also a lot of empty promises which forced the cancellation of the show. However, real fighters fight and that’s why I’m quickly moving on”, said the WBO title challenger.

“Hopefully, I will get to fight Jorge Fernando Castro and that would be in early 2008. In the mean time, I am looking to make a bang in the state of Georgia on December 7th. There is a chance I’ll be fighting for a title in this fight”.

Gunn was also upset that George Blades will be given a nationally televised shot at Antonio Tarver on December 1st while he was lobbying for the fight.

“Styles make fights and this is unfair to the Showtime Network and boxing fans. Tarver and I would have made a great fight. I would love to fight Antonio in the future making 175 is no problem” said the hard punching Canadian.

  5. I’ve looked up the WBO rankings, and Bobby Gunn was in them from as far back as July 2006 at #15.

So, technically, he wasn’t plucked from obscurity – apologies for that – however, his rise to the WBO top 15 is somewhat diluted by the fact it was preceded by a two round NC in March 2006 in which Bobby was decked three times and before that six months of inactivity.

No questioning Bobby’s presence on the WBO rankings. But without wishing to seem like I’m persecuting him, the WBO’s motivation or criteria for his ascension to #15 is hard to fathom too?

Did the ranking surprise you Bobby?

  7. Mike.

It isn’t whether a guy is black, blue, English or American. If a guy can flat out fight, he gets the thumbs up from me. I’m not xenophobic or overtly biased in compiling an opinion. I hope that comes through on these pages.

The reason Bobby gets so much coverage on here began with a message of good luck I posted when he returned to action. I thought he showed guts versus Enzo and while I was fine with the stoppage, he was on his feet and game as they come.

I just don’t think he belonged in that ring with that opponent that night.

He’d be a handful for many at light-heavyweight, but cruiser is too big for him.

    Bobby,

I’m not sure whether to dignify your accusation of racism with an answer. It just too ridiculous to respond to but I suppose I must. My assessment of your ability of a fighter is based on the Enzo fight and the YouTube coverage available, not your ethnicity. I’m disappointed you’ve sought to cloud the discussion with the race card.

You were ranked by the WBO for six months before the Enzo fight? Is that really true?

I’ll have to defer to your better knowledge of the facts on that one. And will seek to substantiate the facts you’ve set out.

  9. Whatever the circumstances behind the loss to Enzo Bobby is a quality fighter and a good guy.

I have never understood the need to dump on someone after a loss. If you fight tough opponents you will win some and lose some, it is the nature of the game.

I have seen Bobby in the gym he trains hard, and has one thing that will keep him in a lot of fights heart. His heart combined with his power I think will surprise a lot of people at light heavy. Cruiserweight he was giving up too much weight to fight the better guys

  11. K-G,

There are several readers just like him.

    Mike,

I’d just like to take you on the point about 30,000 hooligans, not sure what the behaviour was like of the fans present but I think Enzo was the only guy hitting Bobby at will.

Bobby Gunn is a game fella, kept coming and wanted to continue but whether it was premature or not, he was saved from an absolute shellaking. Not matter how many comments I receive about how unjust the stoppage was, let history record that Gunn was being battered, it was a mismatch and while I have nothing but respect for Gunn, he shouldn’t have been in the ring with a guy significantly, heavier, taller, stronger and talented.

That isn’t to say I wouldn’t like to see Gunn prosper or back in the ring in the UK, just not at elite Cruiswerweight level. He doesn’t belong there.

And just to clarify, it was Gunn’s OWN promoter who tried to take the money from him. Although this hasn’t, technically, been proven. It certainly wasn’t the show promoter, Sports Network.

    Regards

The mind boggles as to how the TV networks could ignore Gunn after his awesome and need I say unlucky world title challenge.
