Boxing: Enzo Maccarinelli gets Braithwaite

The sceptic in me wont believe it until I see the Welshman staring across the ring at Wayne Braithwaite, the former WBC Champion. But the Guyanese puncher is signed on for the bout according to John Rawling, a writer with more inside track than most to the machinations of Sports Network, the search for a credible opponent for the current WBO strap holder is at an end. Detours via Cunningham and Haye hit roadblocks but Braithwaite is willing to make the July 21st liason.John’s article can be found by clicking here.

The July 21st card, moved back from earlier in the month is fast becoming the most prestigious Warren has compiled for some time; a WBA light-Welterweight bout featuring Gavin Rees mind-boggling selection as a legitimate opponent for Soulemanye M’Baye and Alex Arthur’s attempt to secure the vacant WBO Super-Featherweight crown. Three tangible belts on one show? Crickey, what next Hatton v Witter or Calzaghe v Froch. Now don’t get carried away!

Of course, the bill will likely be the first beyond the end of Warren’s current ITV contract at is presumably being weighted to provide juicy bait for the broadcaster.

  1. Come on, describing Guillermo Jones as a ‘former light-middleweight’ is a bit misleading, the fella has been a contender for four years in the division.

    He’s a legitimate fighter.

As for Braithwaite, I know he’s been shrewdly picked but in the context of Maccarinelli’s career, the real one, rather than the one projected by his WBO belt, then Big Truck is a good choice.

  2. Wayne Braithwaite ceased being a “credible contender” when stopped early by former light-middle Guillermo Jones and hasn’t done anything since then to suggest he’s gotten over the defeat.
