Ian Bailey, Prizefighter’s cruelest loser, looks to upset Carl Frampton

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Previews, Shop, Sports on June 7, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Despite his diminutive stature and win some lose some record, 26 year old professional fighter Ian Bailey  is a handy little battler and deserves a degree of good fortune and good will this Friday as he travels to Belfast to tackle touted prospect Carl Frampton on the under card of Paul McCloskey’s attempt to encourage veteran Italian Giuseppe Lauri to retire. For international readers or those with a more headline orientated interest in boxing Ian Bailey is Berkshire born, 5-4 (0) thus far, and missed out on a big Prizefighter pay-day on the spin of a coin last month.

Feted, hated, fated? Is Audley stepping closer to defining Haye fight?

In Boxing, British Boxing, Olympic Boxing, Sports on May 24, 2010 at 3:12 pm

There has been something of the David Icke about Audley Harrison throughout his decade as a prominent heavyweight. Fuelled and demonstrated by a paradoxical cocktail of delusion, acute self-awareness and paranoia. Qualities which ostracised him from the boxing public and allowed the media to portray him as the villain, the idiot and the clown in his own one-man pantomime. But like all cabaret shows, it aint over til the fat lady sings and maybe, just maybe, said fat lady is back stage sipping honey and lemon as talk of a Harrison v Haye contest gathers pace.  Read the rest of this entry »

Barry Morrison out of Prizefighter

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Previews, Sports on November 13, 2009 at 3:20 pm

AshleyI’m hearing, thanks to the power of Facebook – so as yet unconfirmed – that fan friendly Light-Welterweight contender Barry Morrison is out of December’s tournament with an unquantified injury. Globe trotting contender Ashley Theophane is one option it would seem.

In the shadow of giants, Sexton wins

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Reports, Mike Tyson, Sports on November 9, 2009 at 8:59 pm

dddPoor old Sam Sexton, not enough that he derailed the Cinderella Man story of Belfast hard man Martin Rogan once, controversially of course, but last weekend he returned to the white hot atmosphere of the Odyssey Arena to thoroughly dismantle the Rogan again. And within 24 hours his considerable achievement was completely outshone by some David v Goliath showdown. Read the rest of this entry »

M’Baye pulls out, Lauri says no; McCloskey still waiting

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Previews, Sports on October 30, 2009 at 10:03 am

LauriPaul McCloskey is still looking for an opponent following the withdrawal of Frenchman Souleymane M’Baye – the former WBA Light-Welterweight champion – from their European title fight next week. The shopping list of potential opponents is seemingly rich, with many of the possible domestic replacements in the gym ahead of the Prizefighter 140 pound tournament next month. One fighter who wont be answering the call is EBU #4 Light-Welterweight Giuseppe Lauri. The Italian, who has the rare distinction of having fought Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter, couldn’t make 10 stone in a week. [Update available]

Lamon Brewster wants Marty Rogan next!

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Previews, Sports on March 18, 2009 at 3:36 pm

oldglovesNow I’m not a regular over at Eastside Boxing, but young James Slater is a dedicated servant to the site and now and then puts together some interesting thoughts. A recent interview with Lamon Brewster - another of my favoured fighters – provided further evidence of just how far the big Irishman has come. The former two time world-title belt holder is eager to move from Michael Sprott to the current darling of the British fight scene. Read the rest of this entry »

BoxingWriter.co.uk Fighter of the Month; September

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Reports, Sports on October 1, 2008 at 9:15 am

Thus far the BoxingWriter.co.uk Fighter of the Month award has been won by Monte Barrett for his destruction of Tye Fields’ flimsy standing as a heavyweight contender, Antonio Margarito’s thrilling suffocation of Miguel Cotto’s resistance and latterly Cedric Boswell’s destruction of pampered prospect Roman Greenberg. I found the stand out performance in September was much harder to select. Read the rest of this entry »

Sexton wins Prizefighter 2; is it really drawing new fans?

In Boxing, British Boxing, Contender Series, Fight Reports, Sports on September 15, 2008 at 10:06 am

Always enlightening to watch an event like this with those not keenly interested in the sport. Spend too much time on Internet forums and it is entirely possible to succumb to the assumption EVERYONE is interested in boxing. Of course they are not. An evening at my old local, The Windmill in the former coal-mining town of Thorne near Doncaster, reintroduced me to this harsh reality, it left me wondering whether this supposedly fan-friendly concept really could attract new fans? Boxing: Rugged Simpkin joins Prizefighter

In Boxing, British Boxing, Fight Previews, Sports on August 28, 2008 at 8:27 am

I first saw Luke Simpkin fight in 2001 against future British title challenger John McDermott in, if memory serves, the walk-out bout on the Danny Williams v Kali Meehan show at Bethnal Green. Dogged and willful the bearded brawler belied his tender years and gave a solid account of himself against the then unbeaten Essex man. Britishboxing.net report the Derbyshire trier has replaced Ian Millarvie in the second installment of the Prizefighter series next month. Read the rest of this entry »
