Oscar Suarez, trainer to Freitas, Hamed dies aged 47

In Boxing, British Boxing, Sports on September 15, 2008 at 7:58 am

Boxing lost a loyal servant this weekend with the unexpected death of Oscar Suarez, the trainer most widely known for shaping Brazilian Acelino Freitas. Later he would take over the most high profile job in boxing, training Prince Naseem Hamed, and though maligned for his lack of impact on the Sheffield-man his death is reason for all of us to pause and take stock. Suarez was believed to have been diagnosed with terminal cancer just over a month ago and leaves behind a wife, Marie, and children. He was just 47.

All posted comments will be directed to the Suarez family at the end of the week.

The thoughts of the boxing world will be with his family. Boxingscene.com broke the news.

Many, many thanks for you comments, I will ensure all of them are forwarded to the Suarez family.

  11. Judging by the timing of your comment Mariseli it proved an emotional time over Christmas and the New Year. Apologies for the delay posting your submission. I’ve been away from the site for a while.

    Regards

  12. Marie I am so sorry and shocked. Oscar was such a dear friend and the nicest person I have met. We had some good and hard times in training camps as you know. He could always see the goos in a person. Love and keep in touch, Maggie

  13. I came online just to read a few things about the husband I MISS so much. When Oscar went into Hospice they gave me a book that told me what to expect as death neared, they failed to give me a book on steps I have to go thru to heal. It’s been and unbearably painful long road for me, but the ppl who send these stories and write such lovely things about Oscar, really and truly help. I am so grateful that so many ppl have reached out to give their condolences and express their grief, I am also very grateful for the positive stories which ppl have shared that show me how Oscar impacted their lives in a positive way. Again, Mr. Payne thank you for keeping this site going, you have no Idea the ease it has brought to my heart.

  14. Went to China with Oscar and we spent alot of time together. He loved Jesus and his wife & family, he was a good man. We’ll miss him till then. God bless you Marie.
